Why Chronicle Smoothies??

Why Chronicle Smoothies? Well, because I love smoothies. And I believe that smoothies are worthy of plenty of love. And I think it's fun to experiment, and share my experience with other like-minded smoothie fanatics.

Papaya the Sailor Man

It's been far too long between smoothies, I'm afraid. But this morning's sure does feel great! It's pretty basic since my fridge is pretty bare, but sometimes simplicity is just what the body needs. I'd like to try this recipe again and beef it up with some avocado, or perhaps some coriander, or even some nuts. Any suggestions?

2 teeny weeny bananas
1 cup Balkan style yoghurt
1 cup papaya (ripe)
1 cup raspberries
1 cup milk

So in this smoothie I did something that I almost never do - used milk. Why don't I use milk? Dunno. But after this smoothie, I think maybe I'll try it more often, since it really adds a nice smoothness and creaminess to a smoothie. Of course vitamin D and calcium are all good things, too, and protein... The papaya and the raspberries balance really nicely. Papaya contains an enzyme called "papain" which helps digestion, though it's more concentrated when the papaya is unripe (papaya salad anyone??). It's also an excellent source of vitamin C (more than 50% of RDV), and decent source of folate (30% RDV). It's also available pretty much year- round, which is nice. How about use half of the papaya for a nice salad, and the other half a few days later for a smoothie? Genius! Smoothie on!

  1. Thx for your receipe Syl! I agree, a little milk does make the smoothie creamier. When I want to clear out my fridge, I sometimes add sour cream instead. I also recently discovered slow roasted hemp hearts; they are delicious and full of omega3. Another one I discovered is Chia seeds, also lots of omega3:
"With six times more calcium than milk, and with greater amounts of high-quality protein than the one found in soy, Chia also helps strengthen muscles and bones."

  2. I always use milk for my smoothie - it makes them less sweet thant using juice. And the proteins and vitamin D is a ++!
Je trouve aussi que ça masque moins le goût des fruits. A splash of juice is sometimes welcome, though.
My trick? Put some silk tofu in the mix... add protein and texture!

  3. Thanks botswacath for reminding me of Silken Tofu. I actually have some in my pantry and will use it next time. Really convenient to have at home, lasts for months (no refrigeration required). Thanks again! I forgot about it.

  4. Thanks for your comments! Sour cream, I've never tried that. Probably because I usually use balkan style yoghurt instead of sour cream most of the time. I have never tried roasted hemp hearts, but I have heard a lot about chia - in fact one of my friends works on a chia farm in Australia! I love the idea of tofu, that's a new one I'll have to try!
